Steve Albini (pictured left) has died aged 61.

The legendary producer, musician, studio owner and engineer (his preferred title) died of a heart attack at his own Electric Audio studio in Chicago on May 7. His staff confirmed the news to Pitchfork.

Albini founded the studio back in 1995 and worked there with the likes of Nirvana, PJ Harvey, The Breeders, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. He was renowned for taking the ethical stance of refusing royalties for any music he worked on, and his fees remained modest over the years.

Although fiercely critical of the music industry, he stepped out from behind the desk to play in a few of his own bands, including Big Black and Shellac. The latter recently announced their first new album in a decade. 'To All Trains' was given a release date of May 17, and the band were due to support it with a series of UK shows in June, following a slot at Primavera Sound in Barcelona.

Within minutes of the news breaking, tributes from throughout the music community and press began to flood in.
